The Trauma Surgery Acting Internship is for students who are interested in pursuing advanced training in the care of trauma patients, or in a future surgical discipline. This rotation includes time in the trauma resuscitation bays, OR, and trauma ICU. Students will be involved in the care of patients of all ages who have suffered blunt and penetrating trauma, including falls, car crashes, assaults, gunshots and stabbing injuries.
Two weeks of the rotation are spent on the night team (6p-6a), responding to trauma activations as part of a team of residents PGY1-4. Activities also include responding to calls on admitted patients, operations on acute traumas, and procedures including laceration repair, chest tube placement, as well as CPR, all under direct supervision. Students will be responsible for documentation on trauma activations as well as procedures performed. They also participate in hand offs to the oncoming team.
The other two weeks will be spent as part of the Trauma ICU team (6a-6p) where students will focus on the critical management of patients following their trauma bay resuscitation. This will focus on the resuscitation, transfusion practices, hemodynamic and respiratory support of critically injured patients. Also to include management/triage of interventions on multiply injured patient, communication with consultants and families. The team consists of a trauma fellow, and residents PGY 1-4. Typical day begins with team rounds, where the AI will be actively involved in presenting patients and formulating plans. After rounds the team including student will follow up on plans and tasks for their patients, including family updates. Student can be responsible for all patient needs including order writing, note writing, specialty consultation and updates, family updates/meetings and basic ICU procedures to include: arterial line, IV, and chest tube placement, NG tube and foley catheter placement, as well as bag mask ventilation, CPR, under direct supervision. Students may also assist with central line placement, and gain basic critical care ultrasound skills.
PREREQUISITES: Completion of Internal Medicine and Surgery Clerkships. |
